Course Descriptions
Accounting I: Accounting I is an introduction to the principles and practice of accounting. The emphasis will be placed on analyzing, recording and proofing entries to maintain accounting balance. This course also includes personal financial recording and maintaining a checkbook. There will be areas of calculating interest and study of economics during the early stages of this course. This introduction will include the study of the first four steps in the accounting cycle and the balance of assets, liabilities, and owner's equity. (This course counts as a VBDSS math credit)
Accounting II: Accounting II is a continuation of the application of accounting with the completion of the accounting cycle. The emphasis will be on review and refresh of analyzing, recording and proofing entries to maintain accounting balance. The course will then continue on to making adjustments, creating financial reports, closing out ledgers and proofing entries to complete the accounting cycle for that period. The last step of the accounting cycle ensures the proper beginning of the next period of the accounting process. There will be individual work, group work and a simulation project that will evaluate the student's progress. (This course counts as a VBDSS math credit)
Introduction to Computer Applications: This course introduces students to a common software platform of Microsoft and its' disciplines. The students will learn about features in four of the Microsoft programs and create materials in each to show proficiency. Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint will be used to create a portfolio on the different aspects of each platform. The students will create essays with and without citations, create spreadsheets with the use of formulas and macros, create a database for storing and presenting layered information, and create presentation with the many options for creativity. This course could create and opportunity for certification in Microsoft Office. (Concurrent Enrollment through Central Maine Community College, Upon successful completion, students will earn 3 college credits)
Principles of Marketing: Marketing education introduces students to the processes involved in providing products and services that meet consumer needs, wants and desires. This course will involve using creativity and the application of types of marketing. The students will come up with business ideas and find ways in both literacy and creativity to enhance the marketing of the business and attract customers. The students will go through some of the steps of creating a business plan and establish a simulation of a budget and financial plan. The students will learn about targeting and segmentation of population groups and the proper uses of advertising to these groups. The students will finish with some short essays to assess their learning based on the standards of business education. (Concurrent Enrollment through Central Maine Community College, Upon successful completion, students will earn 3 college credits)
Understanding Business: In this course, students will be introduced to numerous business and management strategies in the areas of marketing, human resources, and finances. There will be an exploration of different types and sizes of businesses. Students should be prepared for an interactive class that will include hands-on activities and group discussions. Students are expected to come to class with the willingness to learn. The course will also have a focus on understanding business ethics, types of business ownership, business management, hiring process, employee forms, benefits, unions, marketing and accounting. (Concurrent Enrollment through Central Maine Community College, Upon successful completion, students will earn 3 college credits)
